Hydra Island: A Haven of Peace and Charm
Leaving behind the relaxing days on Ios Island, I’m now heading to Hydra Island. Hydra’s port is a charming hub on the island, famous for its lively waterfront adorned with cafes, tavernas, and shops, all overlooking the stunning Aegean Sea.
Getting to Hydra Island from Ios involves taking a ferry, though there are no direct routes. You’ll likely need to transfer in Athens or another island, following these steps:
- Ios to Athens: Catch a ferry from Ios to Athens. The journey can last between 4 to 8 hours, depending on the type of ferry you choose. Both high-speed and conventional ferries operate on this route.
- Athens to Hydra: Upon reaching Athens, head to Piraeus, the city’s main port. From Piraeus, ferries to Hydra are regular. The trip from Piraeus to Hydra typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours.
It’s wise to check ferry schedules and secure your tickets in advance, particularly during peak tourist seasons, as seats tend to fill up fast. Ferry schedules may vary by season, so stay updated by checking with ferry companies or travel agencies for the latest information.

The Jewel of the Saronic Gulf
Hydra, Greece, is home to several historic cannons, which serve as reminders of the island’s significant role in the Greek War of Independence. These cannons are prominently displayed around the island, particularly near the harbor and various fortifications.
As I wandered through the streets, I was captivated by the vibrant bursts of color from the bougainvillea flowers and lush green plants that adorned the whitewashed buildings.
