Visit the Sacsayhuaman National Park

Escape to the Extraordinary

Sacsayhuaman National Park includes various significant archaeological sites around Cusco, Peru:

  • Inkilltambo: An archaeological site known for its terraces and ceremonial significance.
  • Temple of the Moon: Believed to be a fertility temple, this site holds cultural and historical importance.
  • Amaru Wasi: Known for its past use in healing rituals, where shamans performed ceremonies.
  • Chuspiyoq: Features a rock formation known as the Inka’s face, adding a mystical aspect to the site.

I was picked up by my tour guide at the San Pedro Market, where I joined three other travelers. We all squeezed into a taxicab, which took us to the ranch. Once we arrived, our guide took the time to introduce us to the horses, sharing their habits and unique traits. It was nice that we were given the chance to pick a horse that we felt comfortable with. Another guide, a friendly gentleman, came along to help guide us and assist with mounting the horses.

This was my fourth time riding, and I chose to ride Sebastian, a reliable and friendly horse who made me feel right at ease. The ride itself was delightful, with a mostly flat trail and a few hilly sections to keep things interesting but not too difficult. At one point, our guide suggested we try throttling – a faster pace – and I eagerly gave it a go. It was an exhilarating moment, adding just the right amount of thrill to an already fantastic adventure!

Experience Nature’s Majesty

Chuspiyoq, often referred to as the “Inka’s Face,” is one of Cusco’s intriguing rock formations that captures the imagination of travelers. As I approached the site, I could see the unmistakable outline of a face carved into the natural rock. It’s said that the profile resembles that of an Inka, with a distinct forehead, nose, and lips. Chuspiyoq is a site brimming with history. As part of the Inca’s sacred landscape, it served as a ‘wak’a’ or sacred place, where rituals and ceremonies were performed to honor the deities of the Incan pantheon.

Preserve the Wonders of the Natural World

Inkiltambo, also known as Inkilltambo, is a hidden gem located just a short distance from Cusco. The name “Inkiltambo” translates to “Inca Garden”. The area is filled with ancient terraces, pathways, and beautifully carved stones that were once part of a larger Inca agricultural and ceremonial complex. While I was admiring the breathtaking landscape around us, our tour guide began to share some of the many phrases, anecdotes, and proverbs of the Incas. The guide also shared stories of Incan legends, explaining how they believed in harmony with nature and the cosmos.

Adventure Awaits in the Heart of Nature

Where Every Path Leads to Discovery

I cannot remember the name of this place. Our guide informed us that this was a place used for offerings and expressing gratitude to the surrounding land.

Adventure Awaits in the Heart of Nature

The Temple of the Moon, another site within the Sacsayhuaman National Park, is a cave with altars and is believed to have been used for fertility rituals. Amaru Wasi, known for its serpentine rock formations, was a site for healing rituals. The site was cordoned off, accessible only to the eyes from a distance. Standing behind the barriers, we looked out over the sacred grounds.
