The Marine Gate, also known as the Sea Gate or Porta Marina, is a historic entrance to the Old Town of Rhodes in Greece. Back in medieval times, this gate was a major entry point for ships and boats, playing a crucial role in the maritime activities and trade that were central to life in Rhodes. You’ll find it on the western side of the city, near the Mandraki Harbor. Built during the medieval period under the rule of the Knights of Saint John, it’s flanked by two massive towers that were part of the city’s defensive fortifications, serving as defensive positions and lookout points to protect the entrance.

Exploring the ancient walled town of Old Town of Rhodes feels like a journey through history, with its winding streets lined with fascinating historical and architectural marvels waiting to be explored. Regrettably, my exploration of Old Town Rhodes was marred by a mishap in Santorini.
By the way, while adjusting my camera settings, I accidentally deleted a significant number of photos from my memorable adventure. Despite this setback, the beauty and history of Old Town Rhodes left a lasting impression on me.
Old Town of Rhodes’ medieval past at the Roloi Clock Tower
The Roloi Clock, or Clock Tower, is a prominent landmark in the Old Town of Rhodes, Greece. It is located near the Marine Gate, one of the main entrances to the medieval town. Originally constructed by the Knights of Saint John in the 7th century. The tower underwent significant renovations and additions over the centuries.
Perched at the highest point of the medieval town, the clock tower offers panoramic views of the city and the surrounding sea. A popular spot for tourists to visit and take in the historic atmosphere of Rhodes. Additionally, the clock itself is a beautiful example of Ottoman clock design and adds to the charm of the old town.
The year 2021 brought unprecedented challenges due to the global pandemic. Consequently, many attractions, including the Roloi Clock Tower, had to close or limit access to ensure the safety of visitors and locals.
The Church of Our Lady of Burg
As I wandered through the ancient streets of Old Town of Rhodes, it felt like stepping into a vibrant museum. Every turn unveiled a new tale. As I meandered through the maze of narrow pathways, I stumbled upon this enchanting find.
The Knights of St. John, a military order, played a crucial role in defending Rhodes against invaders. They constructed many buildings and fortifications in the walled town, including churches, palaces, and hospitals. One of these religious sites was The Church of Our Lady of Burg.
The Church of Our Lady of Burg, also known as the Church of Panagia tou Bourgou, has a fascinating history. It was built in the 14th century and was an important structure within the Knights of St. John’s complex, who were prominent in Rhodes during the medieval era.
Despite suffering damage in the 19th century, some walls and decorative elements have survived. These remnants are a testament to the church’s architectural beauty and historical significance.
Journey from Rhodes Airport to the Old Town
Traveling from the airport to the Old Town of Rhodes, Greece, was a mesmerizing journey. The roads of Rhodes offered stunning views of Turkey to my left, adding to the allure of the trip. Rhodes, an island in the eastern Aegean Sea, is close to the southwestern coast of Turkey, providing glimpses of the Turkish coastline in certain areas. Entering the Old Town through the Freedom Gate, also known as “Eleftherias Gate,” was an exhilarating experience. The gate’s impressive stone arches and medieval architecture welcomed me into a world of history and enchantment.
Opting to stay at the St Michel Hotel, owned by Cristo, was a decision I did not regret. In fact, booking through Booking.com made the process seamless. The hotel’s 800-year-old history added an extra layer of charm to my stay. Its proximity to the Plaza made exploring convenient. Cristo’s hospitality enhanced my experience, especially starting my day with a delicious breakfast prepared by him, consisting of coffee, honey, yogurt, jam, and fresh-baked bread.

Nestled within the charming streets of Old Town of Rhodes lies a vibrant hub of culture and gastronomy, Hippocrates Square. Known locally as Plateia Ippokratous, this bustling square encapsulates the essence of Greek hospitality and tradition.
As I wandered through Hippocrates Square, I found an array of boutique shops offering a treasure trove of souvenirs and local handicrafts. Whether I was looking for a unique memento of my visit or a gift for a loved one, I was sure to find something special here.
After a day of exploring, a visit to Eros Restaurant was a must. This family-owned eatery offered a warm welcome and a taste of genuine Greek hospitality. Enjoying a meal here was not just about the food; it was about the experience. The owner took pride in offering guests a true taste of Greece, often treating them to complimentary Greek delicacies and wine. It was a gesture that embodied the warmth and generosity of Greek culture.
Returning to my hotel after a long day of touring and enjoying a meal at Eros Restaurant was a comforting experience. Engaging in a pleasant conversation with the owner and receiving a keychain as a welcome gift added a personal touch to my dining experience. The owner’s kindness and generosity left a lasting impression, making my visit truly memorable.
