History & Charm of Old Town of Rhodes
Marine Gate, the historic entrance to Old Town of Rhodes
The Marine Gate, also known as the Sea Gate or Porta Marina, is a historic entrance to the Old Town of Rhodes in Greece. Back in medieval times, this gate was a major entry point for ships and boats, playing a crucial role in the maritime activities and trade that were central to life in Rhodes. You’ll find it on the western side of the city, near the Mandraki Harbor. Built during the medieval period under the rule of the Knights of Saint John, it’s flanked by two massive towers that were part of the city’s defensive fortifications, serving as defensive positions and lookout points to protect the entrance.
Plus, this is where my group meets for our day’s tour, making it the perfect spot to start our adventure.
