**Notes

Greece, like the rest of the world, was grappling with the impacts of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The country had implemented strict measures to curb the spread of the virus, including lockdowns, travel restrictions, and the closure of many businesses and establishments.

My hope began to emerge in the spring of 2021 as Greece announced plans to open its borders to tourists once again. It was a moment of excitement and anticipation for me and other travelers and the tourism-dependent businesses. In May 2021, as soon as Greece officially reopened its borders to international visitors, a wave of optimism swept through the travel community. With the border open and a glimpse of normalcy on the horizon, many tourists, like me, seized the opportunity to explore the beauty and rich culture of Greece once more. I hastily booked my tickets, eager to escape the confines of lockdowns and travel restrictions.

Yet, when I arrived, it was clear that Greece’s tourism scene had changed. The typically vibrant hotspots were quieter, with fewer tourists than before. Some businesses, unable to survive the pandemic’s challenges, had shut their doors temporarily. Despite this, the air was still filled with Greece’s trademark warmth and hospitality, mixed with a cautious sense of hope.

While the pandemic had undoubtedly left its mark on Greece’s tourism industry in 2021, the country’s allure remained undeniable. The country’s iconic historical sites, beautiful beaches, mouthwatering cuisine, and welcoming people continued to attract visitors, inviting them to discover and enjoy all that Greece has to offer.

The reopening of Greece’s borders in May 2021 was a step towards recovery and healing, symbolizing the enduring spirit of this beautiful Mediterranean nation.
