Founders Park: Make Waves, Leave Footprints

Parque de los Fundadores (Founders’ Park) in Playa del Carmen is a vibrant and historical landmark that sits near the beach and serves as a gathering point for both locals and visitors.

Escape to the Shore, Find Your Serenity

As you step into the Founders Park, you’re immediately greeted by the towering Portal Maya, an impressive bronze arch sculpture that stands majestically by the water. This monument commemorates the end of the Mayan calendar in 2012 and features intricate details, depicting a man and a woman being lifted towards the sky by a swirling current of wind, symbolizing the rebirth and continuation of Mayan culture. It’s a popular spot for photos and a must-see for anyone visiting Playa del Carmen.

Sunkissed and Sandy

I noticed a common issue that has affected many coastal areas in recent years—sargassum seaweed. As I approached the shoreline, I could see large patches of this brown seaweed invading the once pristine beaches. The water, usually clear and turquoise, was murky in many areas due to the influx of sargassum.
Although the beaches weren’t in their usual pristine state, many visitors still found ways to enjoy their time, whether by staying further back on the sand or exploring other nearby attractions.

Catch the Sun, Ride the Waves

The seaweed not only made the water look less inviting but also gave off an unpleasant smell as it piled up along the beach. The odor, a mix of rotting vegetation, made it sometimes uneasy to enjoy being close to the shore for too long.

Catch Some Rays

Local performers, musicians, and dancers entertain the crowds with traditional Mexican music and cultural shows. One of the most captivating performances happens at the base of a tall pole located in the Founders park—this is where the “Voladores de Papantla” perform their ancient flying dance. Four men, dressed in colorful traditional attire, climb the pole and, after performing a ritual at the top, descend gracefully in circles while tied by their legs to ropes. Their slow spiral descent is accompanied by the sounds of flute and drums.
