As I approached Filerimos Monastery, a grand avenue of cypress trees welcomed me, creating a beautiful path to this historic site. The monastery’s architecture includes a church, a courtyard, and various other buildings. Dating back to the Byzantine era, Filerimos Monastery boasts a rich history that mirrors the island’s diverse cultural influences. It was constructed on the site of an ancient temple dedicated to Athena, showcasing a blend of Byzantine, Gothic, and Renaissance architectural styles.
Exploring the monastery’s grounds, I marveled at the stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area from the courtyard and chapel. From there, I enjoyed breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and the town of Ialyssos. However, my visit coincided with a period when the monastery was closed to visitors. Unfortunately missed out on seeing the beautiful frescoes and icons, as well as the small museum that houses religious artifacts and objects.

The path winds through a pine forest, offering shade and tranquility. Along the way, I enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the Aegean Sea.
At the top of the path, where a large white cross stands, I am treated to a breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea. The cross against the backdrop of the sea offers me a sense of peace and tranquility.

Constructed in the Doric architectural style, the temple had six columns on its short sides and thirteen on its long sides. While only a few columns and some foundation stones remain today, the temple’s impressive size and grandeur are still evident.
In the 5th century AD, during the early Christian era, a small church was constructed inside the temple’s inner chamber (cella), incorporating some of the ancient stones into its walls. This church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, served as a Christian place of worship for many years.
