Santorini’s Black and Red beaches are truly special, known for their unique colors and geological formations. Each beach offers a distinct experience, with breathtaking natural beauty and crystal-clear waters, making them essential stops for anyone visiting Santorini.

Black Beach

The Black Beach in Santorini refers to the stretch of coastline that includes Perissa and Perivolos beaches, both known for their black volcanic sand. Perissa Beach is the more popular of the two, offering a long expanse of black sand lined with cafes, restaurants, and beach bars. Perivolos Beach, located just south of Perissa, offers a similar experience but with a slightly more upscale vibe. Both beaches offer a range of water sports activities, including jet skiing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent, making it a comfortable place to spend the day lounging by the sea.

Red Beach

The Red Beach (Kokkini Paralia) is renowned for its dramatic red cliffs and dark red sand, which create a visually stunning contrast with the clear blue waters of the Aegean Sea.         The beach is located near the ancient site of Akrotiri and is backed by towering red lava cliffs, making it a popular spot for photography and sunbathing. The beach is relatively           small and can get crowded during peak season, so it’s advisable to visit early in the day. The water at Red Beach is deep and can be rough, so it’s important to exercise caution           while swimming.

Red Beach Warning

Red Beach in Santorini is known for its unique red cliffs and sand, created by volcanic activity. However, one of the risks associated with visiting this stunning location is the potential for loose rocks falling from the cliffs. These rocks can pose a danger to visitors, especially if they are walking or sunbathing near the base of the cliffs.

To minimize the risk of injury, it’s important for visitors to be cautious and aware of their surroundings when visiting Red Beach. Avoiding areas directly beneath the cliffs and staying alert for any signs of falling rocks are essential safety measures. Additionally, it’s advisable to heed any warnings or signage posted in the area regarding rockfall hazards.

The cliffs at Red Beach are made up of soft volcanic rock, which is prone to erosion and weathering. This process can cause rocks to become loose and unstable, increasing the risk of them falling. Factors such as heavy rainfall, strong winds, and seismic activity can also contribute to rockfalls.

Sacred Space, Shared Grace

The White Little Chapel at Red Beach in Santorini, Greece, is a charming, small chapel that sits overlooking the stunning Red Beach.

The chapel is named for its white exterior, which contrasts beautifully with the deep red cliffs and sand of the beach. It’s a popular spot for visitors to take photos and admire the unique scenery.

The chapel’s simple yet picturesque design, combined with its idyllic location, makes it a favorite among those exploring the area.

The Red beach is accessible by boat or by a short hike from the Akrotiri archaeological site.

There are no facilities like sunbeds or umbrellas, so it’s recommended to bring your own shade and water.
