Megalochori is a charming village located in the southwestern part of Santorini, Greece. Known for its traditional Cycladic architecture, narrow streets, and whitewashed buildings, Megalochori offers visitors a glimpse into the island’s rich history and local culture. Located just a short distance from the bustling capital of Fira, Megalochori offers a tranquil retreat away from the crowds, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a more authentic and relaxing experience on the island.

One of the highlights of Megalochori is its well-preserved historic buildings, including old churches, traditional houses, and historic mansions dating back to the 17th century. The village’s architecture is characterized by white-washed buildings with blue-domed roofs, creating a quintessential Greek island charm. Exploring Megalochori’s winding alleys is a delightful experience, offering glimpses of local life and traditional Greek culture. Visitors can wander through the village’s squares, where they’ll find local tavernas, cafes, and shops.

Visiting the village of Megalochori was truly delightful. As we drove there after exploring the Monastery of Elias, we were greeted by charming winding cobbled roads, with cafes and restaurants. Although the Church of Panagia Ton Eisodion was closed due to the pandemic, the sight of the bell tower adorned with blooming bougainvillea was simply picturesque. Our tour guide captured some wonderful photos of me admiring the view, creating lasting memories of the trip.

What made the experience even more special was the camaraderie within our group. Despite coming from different parts of the world and not understanding each other’s languages, we shared plenty of laughs as we explored the village. It was a reminder of how travel can bridge language barriers and create lasting memories.

On our way back, we decided to revisit Santo Wines, where I had been a few days prior. It was a perfect ending to a wonderful day, as we enjoyed another round of drinks, along with some crackers and cheese, while reminiscing about our time in Megalochori.
